Registration
To work in the Northern Territory (NT) as a Licensed Surveyor you must be registered with the Surveyors Board of the Northern Territory.
Yearly registration in the NT is either through:
- completion of a professional training agreement within the NT
- recognition of your interstate registration.
Professional assessment examination
Examinations are used to determine if an applicant is qualified to be registered as a licensed surveyor and must be done prior to applying for registration.
Along with your completed form, applications must include:
- applicable registration fee
- current photo ID.

New application
If you are not registered with another board, you must apply for a new registration.
Graduates who have completed the requirements of the Board and have undertaken a Professional Training Agreement, which includes:
- a minimum of 2 years satisfactory practical training
- a minimum of 12 months (240 days) on cadastral surveys
- completed the required practical projects.
In addition, applications must include:
- current photo ID
- applicable registration fee.

Mutual recognition
If you hold a current registration in another state or Territory, you may be eligible for Mutual Recognition. Please see the mutual recognition guideline PDF (71.7 KB) for further information.
Along with your completed form, applications must include:
- applicable registration fee
- copy of your current certificate of registration or licence or annual practising certificate from another State or Territory or New Zealand
- current photo ID
- Letter of Accreditation from your home state.

Renewal application
To renew your registration you must lodge an application with the Board prior to 1 December each year to ensure your registration continues. If you fail to lodge and pay for this application the Board may remove your name from the public register.
Along with your completed form, applications must include:
- applicable registration fee
- current photo ID.

Restoration
If your registration has lapsed, you can apply to the Board to restore your registration as a Licensed Surveyor.
Along with your completed form, applications must include:
- applicable registration fee
- resume detailing work carried out as a licensed surveyor
- description of roles and responsibilities
- criminal history name check within 3 months from date of issue
- current photo ID.

Letter of accreditation requests
If you require a letter of accreditation from the Board, the following must be provided.
- completed application
- applicable registration fee
- current photo ID.

Lodgement
Submit your forms to a Territory Business Centre along with the relevant application fee.
Applications must be lodged with all supporting documents. An incomplete application will cause delays with the processing and issuing of the licence.
Fees can be paid by credit card, cash, EFTPOS or cheque payable to the Receiver of Territory Monies.

Prescribed Fees
The prescribed fees are defined by revenue units. The monetary value of a revenue unit is calculated using consumer price index data for Darwin, as set out in the Revenue Units Act 2009. The monetary value of the revenue unit is reviewed by government once a year, with any increase to take effective on 1 July each year.
Please note the fees for 2024/25 financial year are calculated at the revenue unit of $1.41 as per advice from the Territory Revenue Office.
